Teams often rely on Slack for quick updates about clients, projects, or urgent issues. But when a key phrase—like a client’s name, a contract number, or a sensitive word—comes up in conversation, it can be hard to keep track. With Workload, you can automatically Track Slack Mentions in Google Sheets, creating a reliable log your business can reference anytime.
Every time a monitored keyword appears, the automation adds a new row in Google Sheets with the message, user, and timestamp. Whether you’re tracking customer complaints, monitoring compliance terms, or following internal project codes, the data updates instantly without manual effort.
This automation gives business teams a simple way to organize conversations, spot trends, and respond quickly to important mentions—without digging through endless Slack threads.

⚙️ How to Track Slack Mentions in Google Sheets
Apps expect data in different formats—like dates, names, or labels. Workload’s built-in AI Wizard lets you clean or adjust data between steps. If your trigger already sends clean data, you can skip formatting altogether.
Note: To make these steps easier to follow, we’ve rearranged the screenshots from the video into a final order that best reflects how the automation should be built in Workload.
Step 1: Create a New Automation (Workload)
Open the Workload Dashboard and click Create Workflow.
Give your automation a title (ex: Track Slack Mentions in Google Sheets).
Step 2: Set up a Trigger (Slack)
Click the Trigger box and select Slack.
Choose the event New Mention.
Click Sign in to connect your Slack account if you haven’t done so already. For help, follow our step-by-step guide on how to connect Slack to Workload. Once connected, click Continue.
Enter the keyword or phrase you want to track in Slack (ex: “contract”) then click Continue.
Click Test Trigger to pull in sample data.
Once you fonfirm a succesful trigger test, click Continue.
Note: While the trigger response includes a timestamp, you’ll need to format this into a readable date using AI Wizard before sending it to Google Sheets.
Step 3: Format the date (AI Wizard by Workload)
Click into the action step, choose AI Wizard by Workload from the TOOLS list.
Select the event Format Data, then click Continue.
In the input field, map the timestamp value from the Slack trigger (Field TS from the Slack trigger). In the prompt field, enter: “Convert timestamp into readable date and time”. Now hit Continue.
Click the Test Action button.
Confirm that you get a response with the date formatted correctly, then click Continue.
Step 4: Add an action (Google Sheets)
Click the + icon to add a step and choose Google Sheets as the app.
Select the event Create Spreadsheet Row.
Click Sign in to connect your Google account if you haven’t done so already. For help, follow our step-by-step guide on how to connect Google Sheets to Workload. Once connected, click Continue.
Select your target spreadsheet and worksheet.
Now, map the fields you want to include in the Google Sheets row by clicking + Add to in the rowData box. You can add as many as you need for each column you want to add data to. Once you have finished, click Continue.
Note: The available fields available are determined by the worksheet you choose so the columns will be different from those used in our example.
Click Test Action to send a test row into your Google Sheet.
Once you have successfully tested the action, click Continue.
Step 5: Test and activate your automation (Workload)
Open your Google Sheet to confirm the test row appears correctly.
Return to the Workload editor and make sure every step shows a green indicator. Now, click the toggle to activate your automation.
* Your system is now live—every time someone mentions your chosen keyword in Slack, the details will be logged instantly in Google Sheets.
